Hybrid work has become the default preference for employees, but the hiring pipeline is quietly moving in the opposite direction.
Among remote-capable US employees, 52% are hybrid, 27% are fully remote, and only 21% are fully on-site (Robert Half, 2026). Globally, 54% of knowledge workers report a hybrid model. Employers mostly agree in principle — 88% offer some hybrid option — but only 25% extend it to all employees, and 61% of US companies now have formal return-to-office policies (though just 37% actually enforce attendance).
The real disconnect shows up in hiring: 77% of new job postings in Q1 2026 were fully on-site, compared with only 19% hybrid and 4% fully remote — a sharp contrast with existing workforce arrangements. Employee preference is clear on the other side: 55% of job seekers rank hybrid as their top choice, and 29% of remote/hybrid employees say they'd consider quitting over a full return-to-office mandate.
